Songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mallory Hawk was raised in the southern military town of Fayetteville, North Carolina. A daughter of two music fanatics, Hawk’s devotion to rock music started as early as age 4. After finding a home in NYC's DIY scene, she quietly worked on her own songs as she became well-known as a live bassist/vocalist for bands like Trace Mountains, Customer, and M(h)aol, with Rolling Stone deeming her “a NYC indie scene long-timer” at SXSW 2024. Her new album Chinook, produced by Sam Acchione, is out July 31st.
Across Chinook, Hawk’s melodies weather unexpected journeys through tempo and tone, presenting the flavors of rage and tenderness she’s sampled in her roles as a friend, neighbor, family member, and creator. The intimate songs that began as home-recorded sessions opened up into full-band bounty, supported and enhanced by Hawk’s years as a steward of her scene. As a result, Chinook is strange yet classic—a soaring, solid and singularly envisioned vehicle of self-preservation.
